What is Nambu Ironware?

Nambu ironware, or Nambu Tekki, is a traditional craft from Iwate Prefecture with a history dating back to the 17th century.
Its origins can be traced to Toshinao Nanbu, the first lord of the Morioka domain, who invited skilled iron casters from Kyoto to produce iron kettles for tea ceremonies.
Over time, smaller kettles and other household items were developed, bringing Nambu ironware into everyday life.

The craft involves pouring molten iron into molds made from sand and clay, using casting techniques refined over centuries.
Known for its durability, Nambu ironware also develops a unique color and character with use, becoming more beautiful over time.

Combining everyday functionality with timeless beauty, Nambu ironware continues to embody the harmony of practicality and craftsmanship.

A Visit to SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO

Founded in 1625, SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO has a history spanning nearly 400 years.
Passed down through generations, the studio continues its tradition of iron casting in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture.

The journey has not always been easy. During wartime, restrictions on the use of iron made production difficult.
Despite these challenges, successive generations preserved traditional techniques and designs, ensuring that the craft of Nambu ironware would live on.

Today, Nariaki Suzuki, the 16th-generation master, continues to explore new forms of expression while honoring the designs and craftsmanship passed down by his predecessors.

Morihisa Brown: A Color Passed Down Through Generations

One of the hallmarks of SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO is its signature Morihisa Brown finish.
Made by blending red iron oxide pigment with lacquer, this traditional color enhances the intricate patterns and natural texture of cast iron.
Its subtle, earthy tone blends naturally into modern interiors.

While designs evolve with each generation, the coloring technique remains unchanged.
This balance of tradition and innovation defines the character of SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO.

Local Materials, Skilled Hands

Sand is one of the essential materials used to make Nambu ironware molds.
At SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO, craftsmen still collect sand from the foot of Mount Iwate, mixing it with water and clay to create 15 to 20 different blends for various purposes.

As the condition of the sand changes with the weather, there is no fixed formula.
Instead, craftsmen rely on their sense of touch to determine the right balance.
Working with local materials and adjusting them by hand, these daily decisions and generations of experience have shaped the quality of Nambu ironware for centuries.

Preserving Tradition, Embracing Change

Shigeo Suzuki is the 16th-generation master of SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO.
Growing up, he simply thought of Nambu ironware as his grandfather's work. When his grandfather passed away during his high school years and his mother became the 15th-generation master, he began to consider taking over the family business himself.

After studying metal casting at Tokyo University of the Arts, Suzuki entered the fashion industry, where he also worked in graphic design.

Working alongside leading designers, photographers, and other creative professionals, he learned the importance of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and an uncompromising approach to quality.
His background in graphic design continues to influence his work today. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, Suzuki combines different ideas and influences to create new forms, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional craftsmanship.

Shigeo Suzuki, 16th-Generation Master of SUZUKI MORIHISA STUDIO

When Shigeo Suzuki joined the family business, he came to appreciate the craftsmanship that had been passed down through generations.
I was impressed by the quality of the work.

I felt it was my responsibility to maintain that standard.”
At an exhibition celebrating his succession as the 16th-generation master, Suzuki presented around 40 new designs.

To him, carrying on a tradition isn't simply about preserving the past.

It's about maintaining the same level of craftsmanship while exploring new sizes and forms that suit modern life.
“I don't think it's enough to just make good things in Iwate and wait for people to find us.”
Instead, Suzuki believes in going out, sharing his work, and creating new connections and opportunities.

With generations of craftsmanship as his foundation, he continues to bring fresh ideas and experiences into his work, keeping the tradition relevant today.
