Futoshi Yamashita is a ceramic artist based in Aso, Kumamoto, continuing his pottery practice in this region. His process begins with digging clay directly from the mountains of Aso. Using raw, expressive clay—different from the finely refined varieties—and incorporating materials like lava, volcanic ash, and plant life, he creates powerful, one-of-a-kind vessels that capture the essence of Aso's natural environment.
