A good night's sleep is crucial to our physical and mental health, particularly when expending energy while exploring the outdoors and hiking.
Sleeping in a tent under the stars sounds highly romantic, but can be quite an uncomfortable prospect in reality. If struggling with heavy equipment and waking up with aches and pains sounds familiar to you, we can help.
Technology has come a long way, and there are a variety of options out there to get a decent night's sleep while on the go. Besides a good sleeping bag, you’ll need a good mattress.
There are three main types of camping mattress available. Closed-cell foam mattresses are the most basic type; cheap and lightweight but with low cushioning and bulky to carry.
Air mattresses are more comfortable and more expensive, quite compact but often require a pump to inflate. The third type is the self-inflating mattress, which sits somewhere in between.
Less expensive than an air mattress and with no need to carry a pump, but with better cushioning than a closed-cell foam mattress. Here we'll introduce one of the best self-inflating mattresses that we've come across.

The Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus sleeping pad is made up of a compressible lightweight foam that self-inflates, without the need for a pump or blowing up with your own lungs. The benefit of a foam and air mattress system is that it provides both soft comfort and firm support along your whole body.

It’s not just the hardness of the ground, but also the cold temperature which contributes to waking up with a sore body. Built with thick, diagonal-cut foam, this sleeping pad offers efficient comfort, with an R-value of 3.2 which provides great insulation from the ground when camping in cool temperatures.

The breathable, smooth and matte texture of the outer surface means that it doesn't get sweaty or stick to the skin – a welcome characteristic for camping during the more humid months in Japan.

The rigorously tested WingLock™ valve is placed conveniently at the top of the pad for easy access and top-up. The simple and intuitive valve system takes the effort out of inflation and deflation.

The Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus is not the lightest, most compact, cheapest, or most comfortable camp mattress out there.
It is, however, an extremely dependable all-rounder which performs highly in all areas, enabling you to hit the trail with confidence and ensure restful nights under the stars.
