I’ve finally been left behind by the world of social media and find myself just scrolling through Instagram in my thirties. However, since it’s a place filled with information I’d rather not see, I’ve made peace with taking it easy. The only way I keep up with trends these days is through Instagram’s "Explore" page. I have to admit, and I’m genuinely sorry considering my line of work, but it’s mostly food that shows up—laughs.
Lately, I’ve been into making Greek yogurt... also known as strained yogurt. I feel like it’s making me a bit of a “healthy girl,” so I’ve been enjoying it enthusiastically at home. But enough about that. Although I can't create anything that looks particularly "Instagrammable," I love enhancing the mood by serving it in beautiful pottery.
One of my favorite pieces is from Hanako Sakashita.
She works with a technique called “nerikomi,” where colors are mixed into the clay to create patterns. When explaining to customers, I often compare it to “kintaro-ame” (a traditional Japanese candy with patterns inside), which might help you visualize it too. Although the technique sounds simple in words, it’s incredibly time-consuming and labor-intensive. Perhaps that’s why Sakashita's pieces exude such warmth and affection.
The patterns reach all the way to the edges of the pieces, so even when food is served, you can still see the cute designs. Every angle of her pieces, inside, outside, and even underneath, is adorned with patterns, ensuring that your food presentation will always stand out. Even just having them around is delightful. There are also other beautiful items, like flat plates and chopstick rests, so please take a look!
